Fundamentals of Clinical Hypnosis Level 1 Workshop for Certification


Clinical hypnosis targets mind/body communication to create change. The targeted use of suggestions that occurs in hypnosis can influence the mind/body system in numerous ways including improving immune function, altering pain, improving the gut biome and reducing blood flow to a surgical site. For some, hypnosis is an alternative to anesthesia. It has been used successfully to improve both comfort and compliance in patient’s undergoing medical and dental procedures, saving thousands of dollars.



Hypnosis is equally beneficial in behavioral health with a broad range of applications including the treatment of anxiety, depression, habit disorders, trauma and behavioral aspects of many known medical problems. As a therapeutic technique, hypnosis offers novelty of experience creating effective and deeply engaging experiences of change. While hypnosis engages the mind, it also activates imagination and the unconscious. Without being called such, hypnosis is a somatic therapy through its use of bridging mind/body communication. In treating anxiety and depressive disorders, hypnosis has both rapid interventions aimed at improving self- regulation as well as interventions aimed at physiology, mind or behavior, allowing for tailoring to the individual. Hypnosis helps a patient tap into their inner strengths and resources. Patients are empowered as they develop skill-based techniques. For those with a preference for a cognitive-behavioral therapy approach, research has shown that adding hypnosis into the treatment improves outcomes. These improved outcomes are seen in treating anxiety, depression, pain and more. 


Clinical hypnosis incorporates the science of neurobiology and brain plasticity. Its principles are trans-theoretical. For clinicians across medical and behavioral health disciplines, learning the use of hypnosis heightens attention to language and the use of communication skills to facilitate change in thinking, feeling, perception and behavior. Suggestion is an essential aspect of any treatment. Learning hypnosis allows one to understand better one’s use of language in treatment and how to increase and diversify skills in the implicit and explicit suggestion of therapeutic possibilities. We all know how something said in just the right way for a person can enable impactful change. As a clinician, unlike strategies that are problem specific, clinical hypnosis can transform the way one thinks about patient problems and the solutions one offers.


The Fundamentals of Clinical Hypnosis Workshop, the first part of a series of workshops in the certification program for clinical hypnosis, is intended for licensed health professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, dentists, counselors, social workers and those in related fields. Faculty will teach you the principles and process of hypnotic inductions, suggestions and treatment. The workshop is a mix of didactic presentations, demonstrations, experiential exercises and faculty-led small group practice tailored to the specific needs and learning style of each participant. At the conclusion of the workshop you will have been taught the basic skills required to utilize clinical hypnosis and begin to apply it to your practice.

Upon completion of the course Participants will be able to do the following in their clinical practices:



  1. Participants will be able to define hypnosis, and what it is not.

  2. Participants will be able to describe how to use hypnosis ethically.

  3. Participants will be able to perform 2 simple inductions of their client to achieve a state of deep relaxation.

  4. Participants will be able to understand the use of ego strengthening and post hypnotic suggestion.

  5. Participants will be able to reorient the client fully and safely after the hypnosis session is completed.


About the Instructors



Dr. Bridget S. Bongaard, MD, FACP, FIM


Dr. Bongaard has a life long interest in medicine and healing. She began first as a nurse’s aide, and used this to work her way through Nursing school at Georgia State University. The desire for becoming a physician could not be laid to rest and she worked her way as a nurse through medical school, graduating in 1983 from the University of Florida. Next to internship, and residency at Bowman Gray/North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem then settled in Charlotte and Concord where a private practice in Internal Medicine of 30 years supported her community.


Through this all she became increasingly interested in how disease, and healing occurs so took formal training with a Fellowship at the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine, then founded CMC- North East Medical Centers first Integrative Medicine practice, Holistic Nursing, Integrative Chaplain program, Integrative Volunteers and Integrative Practitioner Training Program. Hypnosis became a fascination as well, with the recognition of the power of the subconscious mind in determining outcomes for healing so she began training at the American Society for Clinical Hypnosis, completing her Consulting level in 2104 and also provided teaching for the organization at workshops when needed.   On retiring to Maui, she became a Hospice Physician, and also did relief work for Kula Hospital/clinic, and Hale Makua. Dr. B in partnership with Anna Mayeda from the American Cancer Society, then created the first Maui Cancer Wellness Retreat, now in it’s third year. She loves to teach, and write about the healing process, and authored a section on Psychooncology in the recent Breast Cancer Webinar for AZCIM.

The State of Hawai`i has designated the National Association of Social Workers Hawai’i Chapter as an approving body for continuing education activities in the State of Hawai`i. The chapter offers organizations and individuals the opportunity to provide formal continuing education activities to social workers and receive continuing education (CE) contact hours. This program has been approved by NASW for 18.5 CEs.


According to the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs for LMFTs, as defined in Hawaii Revised Statutes (“HRS”) 451J-1: "Continuing education courses" means courses approved by the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy: Hawaii Division (currently known as Hawaiian Islands Association for Marriage and Family Therapy), American Psychological Association, Hawaii Psychological Association, National Association of Social Workers, or National Board for Certified Counselors and Affiliates, Inc. 


CE Credits - General Program Information The Hawaii Psychological Association (HPA) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The Hawaii Psychological Association maintains responsibility for its sponsored programs and their contents. Participants will be provided with documentation of CE credits. Important Notice: Those who attend the workshops and complete the HPA evaluation form will receive continuing education credits. Please note that APA CE rules require that we only give credit to those who attend the entire workshop.



  1. To be eligible to receive a continuing education letter of attendance for credit, a participant must attend the entire institute or workshop that is offered for credit.

  2. No partial credit will be given.

  3. Credit will not be granted to registrants who are more than 15 minutes late, are absent for more than 15 minutes during a session, or depart more than 15 minutes early from a session.

  4. To receive credit, a participant must sign the sign-in/sign-out sheet for each segment of an offering where sign-in/sign-out is required for attendance.

  5. Credit will not be granted to registrants who do not submit a completed, signed evaluation form at the end of the session.

  6. It is the responsibility of registrants to comply with these requirements. HPA staff does not have the authority to waive this policy.


Where there is the potential for stress resulting from material being presented, participants will be informed of this in the advertisement of the workshop, and at the time of the offering of the workshop or the material to be presented. Each participant will be given the opportunity to absent herself/himself from that section of the workshop without jeopardizing his or her complete attendance requirement. Should the potential for stressful material exist throughout the activity, in a significant degree, the participant will be informed and may choose to not attend the workshop, in which case all costs will be refunded to the participant. Complaints: Participants may file a complaint directly with the CE Administrator, Hawaii Psychological Association, P.O. Box 833, Honolulu, Hawaii 96808. If resolution is not satisfactory at this level, the complaint is brought to the attention of the CE Committee and/or the President of the Hawaii Psychological Association. Who should attend the CE workshops: The workshops will be beneficial for psychologists, physicians, psychiatrists, physician assistants, social workers, marriage & family therapists, nurses, counselors, CSAC counselors and other allied health care professionals. Information provided in the workshops will also be helpful for members of other professions and agencies.


Complaints


Grievance Procedure Hawai`i Psychological Association (HPA) is fully committed to conducting all activities in strict conformance with the American Psychological Association's Ethical Principles of Psychologists. HPA will comply with all legal and ethical responsibilities to be non-discriminatory in promotional activities, program content and in the treatment of program participants. The monitoring and assessment of compliance with these standards will be the responsibility of the Chair in consultation with the members of the continuing education committee, the HPA Ethics Chairperson and the Convention Chairperson. While HPA goes to great lengths to assure fair treatment for all participants and attempts to anticipate problems, there will be occasional issues which come to the attention of the workshop/convention staff which require intervention and/or action on the part of the staff or an officer of HPA. This procedural description serves as a guideline for handling such grievances. When a participant, either orally or in written format, files a grievance and expects action on the complaint, the following actions will be taken. 1. If the grievance concerns a speaker, the content presented by the speaker, or the style of presentation, the individual filing the grievance will be asked to put his/her comments in written format. The CE Chair will then pass on the comments to the speaker, assuring the confidentiality of the grieved individual. 2. If the grievance concerns a workshop offering, its content, level of presentation, or the facilities in which the workshop was offered, the CE administrator(s) and/or convention chair will mediate and will be the final arbitrators. If the participant requests action, the convention chair will: a. attempt to move the participant to another workshop or b. provide a credit for a subsequent similar workshop or c. provide a partial or full refund of the workshop fee. Actions 2b and 2c will require a written note, documenting the grievance, for record keeping purposes. The note need not be signed by the grieved individual. 3. If the grievance concerns the HPA CE program, in a specific regard, the CE Chair/Administrator(s) will attempt to arbitrate.
