Event Description

The LA Global Music Festival is a celebration of all cultures via their sacred music from around the world. Co-produced by the Resonance Collective and Numinous Music, participants of this one-day event will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in performances and workshops featuring a rich tapestry of musical global music traditions, all converging in the heart of Los Angeles. The Inuit soul group Pamyua (From Alaska), known for their traditional songs and drum dances of the Yup’ik, headline the launch of this brand-new annual event.

LA Brazilian artist Caro Pierotto will open the concert performing original songs from her new album Sambalismo, inspired by her Brazilian roots.

Join us for an afternoon of music and dance workshops celebrating music traditions from around the world!

First workshop @ 3pm
The festival workshops begin with an interactive experience that teaches Yup'ik drum-dance songs and choreography presented by Pamyua members Phillip Blanchett, Stephen “Qacung” Blanchett and Aassanaaq “Ossie” Kairaiuak. This workshop explains ancestral, environmental and spiritual motivations common in the Central Yup'ik (Indigenous Alaskan Natives) tradition from Southwestern Alaska. An overview of Inuit cultures from the circumpolar North shows a relationship between indigenous peoples from Eastern Siberia, Alaska, Canada to Greenland. Participants will be introduced to the Yup'ik language through the music and see a glimpse of performance & ceremony through the dance.

Second workshop @ 4:15pm
Eres Medicina band members Enrique Marin, Rosalina Rosales, Nicki Wong and Tia-Marie Ravi Jaspreet Brown, will share sound, music, and oral traditional teachings corresponding and aligned to the immediate world around us. The teachings shared will be both Western and Eastern founded in Mexikah, Aztec - Toltec philosophy and universal ancestral wisdom. This will include a four-direction ritual calling and sound meditation. Participants will engage in a sing-along of Nahuatl songs and be part of a drum and tobacco ritual, including a smudging offering for people. This workshop will invite the community to connect with themselves, their ancestors, and the world through the art of storytelling.

Third workshop @ 5:30pm
A traditional Raga singing workshop led by Kamini Natarajan and supported by her daughter Shivali Chandrashekar and Tabla Player Saheb Singh. Ragas are a melodic framework for composition and improvisation in Indian Classical Music. Participants will learn the basics of Indian Classical Music as well as learn a number of Ragas. This workshop is for all ages and no previous singing or music reading experience is required. Kamini has performed at festivals including Bhakti Fest, Shakti Fest, World Cultural Fest, and the Carlsbad Music Festival and worked with such artists as Anoushka Shankar, Jai Uttal and Saheb Singh.
